2022 Darlington Exhibition - Brian Chaffer
Brian once again turned to exploiting his collection of mint red/ zinc/ black Meccano parts and brought along an impressive fully working model of a JCB Tracked Excavator. Driven by several motors, all controlled from a hard-wired control unit, the model faithfully replicated the actions of the actual machine. A very impressive model indeed, which won him second place and prize. (22/10/2022)Click here to see higher resolution photo

2022 Darlington Exhibition - Chris Shute
Chris is always looking to challenge himself with something different certainly set the bar high again! His model, that of an automaton constructed from within the contents of a number ten set, was that of an automata that would write the word Meccano whilst on a revolving stage, all driven by a clockwork motor. Not only did Chris successfully achieve this but he also managed to incorporate movement to the manikins head and lips, amazing!! (22/10/2022)Click here to see higher resolution photo

2022 Darlington Exhibition - Geoff Rowlinson (2)
Geoff, a constructor noted for his clocks, is turning his attention more and more these days to that of a ‘novel type’ as he did on this occasion. His latest offering, that of a ‘tea serving robot’ is based on an automaton believed to have existed in 17th C Japan. Built for an emperor to impress (or possibly intimidate!) his guests, the robot would approach a seated guest with a cup of tea, pause, allow the said guest to remove the cup and then return to its starting position, which is exactly what Geoff’s model did. The original was thought to be spring driven, something Geoff tried to emulate, however this was difficult on a small scale and therefore his model was driven by an electric motor. 2022 Darlington Exhibition - John Herdman
Among the ‘Large Scale’ models on display this year was a model based on a crane owned and operated by Huwood Mining Engineers based in the Team Valley. Built by John Herdman using parts from the subscription Blocksetter, this giant Radial Gantry Crane contained three motors and faithfully replicated the movements of the original; Hoist, Crab and Travel. Alas the original was dismantled around 2004. (22/10/2022)Click here to see higher resolution photo

2022 Darlington Exhibition - John Sharpe
John exhibited his version of Super Model No. 6, the Meccano Stiff Leg Derrick. Driven by a E15R the crane faithfully replicates the functions of the original i.e. Hoisting, Slewing and Luffing. However John has deviated from the original somewhat by re-designing the gearbox and incorporating clutch drives on all the functions, thus ensuring that all three controls are in ‘safe’ mode when released.
