Virtual "Darlington" - October 2020 (Page 2)
The club should have held an exhibition at Darlington on October 24th 2020. Unfortunately due to the Coronavirus epidemic this (together with all our other exhibitions and meetings) have been cancelled. We therefore decided to again put on a 'virtual' exhibition to allow members to display the models they would normally have displayed at Darlington. Twenty members have entered this virtual exhibition and photos of their models are spread over two pages on this website.
The models here are an interesting lot. Some are brand new, and having there first exposure here. Others are older models which have not been seen for some years and all shades in between. We hope that you enjoy them.
A random selection of models from this 'Virtual Exhibition' appear at the top of this page, but they can all be seen over the two pages of photo galleries.
In addition some of our members have provided videos of their models working. These videos can be seen further down the page.
Also one member has written an article about his models which can be seen at the bottom of this page.

'Virtual Darlington' Exhibition October 2020 - This model built by John Herdman of a BMMO SOS QL single deck bus was introduced in 1928 in the livery of Northern General Transport. The model is based on the one which has been restored by Beamish Museum and currently resides there. The model was on display at the Museum for the occasion of the opening of their replica Northern Bus Garage. The model is driven and steered by 12v Buhler motors which are controlled by the Meccano infra-red system. (01/10/2019)

The pivotal or radial axle car was introduced in 1925 and meant that a long wheelbase four wheeler whose axles could pivot on bends would give the same ride as a more expensive and heavier bogie car. Although the system worked well at first, as the equipment became worn the pivoting mechanism failed to operate correctly and most cars were either locked solid or re-trucked. You will have to wait until our next actual real exhibition to see whether the Meccano model performs any better!! (07/10/2020)

'Virtual Darlington' Exhibition October 2020 - Great North Air Ambulance G-HEMS. The model built buy John Herdman has a slowly rotating motor and is normally displayed at our exhibitions alongside the Great North Air Ambulance collection bucket to promote the fact that the North Eastern Meccano Society supports the Air Ambulance. Sadly this year we have not been able to make bucket collections as exhibitions have not been able to take place. Anyone wishing to help the Air Ambulance please make a donation to them direct. The model built by John Herdman is powered by two 12v Buhler motors which drive the two main wheels through a Gleasman-type power and steering double differential system which allows the two wheels to operate at different speeds for cornering, although still receiving full power. Furthermore stopping the drive motor and retaining power to the steering motor means that the model will rotate on its axis with one wheel running forward and the other in reverse. It is controlled by the Meccano infra-red system. A third motor uncontrolled powered by its own 6v battery box operates the axe in a continuous chopping motion. (24/10/2020)

'Virtual Darlington' Exhibition October 2020 - Three Railway Breakdown Cranes built by Michael Gray.
The ‘master crane’ is the one in the middle, made from the Swiss Stokys system. This is straight from their No4 set manual, and is gauged to run on 45mm track. The system dates from the early 1940s and is still in production, after several changes of ownership.
The smaller (LH) crane is made from the current German Eitech system (previously marketed in the UK as Constructo, made in the now defunct DDR). My apologies – the perspective makes it look larger relative to the Stokys crane than it actually is.
And lastly, but not least, the Meccano version (RH) based on the Stokys crane. The colours are the 1978 dark blue and yellow; the last scheme from the Binns Road factory in Liverpool, and a personal favourite. Again gauged for 45mm track.

The SLJ900/32, manufactured by the Beijing Wowjoint Machinery Company and designed by the Shijiazhuang Railway Design Institute, weighs in at a mighty 580 tonnes, is 91 metres long and 7 metres wide. The colossal machine offers a totally new way to complete large bridge projects without the need for expensive and complex scaffolding and framework structures. It is an update of my earlier model that I built in 2015. The bridge framework and section is similar to the one I built 1n 2015. It is not a scale model as it is the principle of how they do it.
