Shildon Exhibition May 2019 - Brian Harper's model of the Wimshurst Electrostatic Machine. This machine creates static electricity which is stored in the two jars at the sides (called 'Leyden Jars'), one positive and the other negative. When the voltage difference between the jars is big enough an electrical arc will jump across the gap at the top. It takes 33,000 Volts to produce an arc 1cm long in dry air. This machine has a gap of 1.5cms, so the voltage required is 50,000 Volts. (26/05/2019)
