Darlington Exhibition October 2018 - Rob Mitchell's Chaotic Rope machine. A fast running driver imparts momentum to a rope ;loop which is surprisingly stable until it is prodded! Tilting the thing a few degrees back towards the vertical makes the rope climb higher until it collapses. The rope is two bootlaces glued together. (13/10/2018)

Darlington Exhibition October 2018 - Brian Harper with his Meccano version of the popular children’s board game ‘Mouse Trap’. Apparently he was prompted to build this as his grand children thought it would be a good idea! It certainly was at the end of the day as this model won Brian third prize!! (13/10/2018)

Darlington Exhibition October 2018 - It is not very often that you see Meccano being used to recreate scientific apparatus, but that is exactly what Brian Harper has done. Developed sometime in the late 19th century the Wimshurst machine was developed as a machine for generating high voltages by British inventor James Wimshurst. Faithfully replicated in Meccano to a design by the late Noel Ta’Bois, Brian’s machine will produce static electricity which is stored in two Leyden Jars until the voltage between them reaches a value sufficient to produce an arc across the arc gap, the potential required to produce this being in the region of 33Kv—50Kv (13/10/2018)
